Congratulations to the second PETRONAS Technology Challenge winner!

We are pleased to announce Sonomatic Ltd as the winner of the second PETRONAS Technology Challenge – Field Inspection Tool for Composite Overwrap Repairs over Carbon Steel Pipelines and Piping.

The objective of this challenge is to find an effective inspection tool to examine and monitor the integrity of the composite overwrap used for repairs of carbon steel pipelines and piping. The advancement in the composite overwrap technologies has led the oil & gas industry to expect that the service life of these repairs to last for decades hence the requirement of regular monitoring and inspection in ensuring operational safety and operational optimisation.

The second PETRONAS Technology Challenge received an encouraging number of proposals from seven different countries across the globe. The proposals ranged from multiple inspection techniques such as Ultrasonic Testing, Electromagnetic, Laser Testing Methods, Guided Wave Testing, Microwave method and X-Ray technology. These proposals were evaluated by a panel of expertise through a comprehensive assessment process and technology demonstration. The final outcome revealed that the proposal from Sonomatic Ltd has what it takes to meet the objective of this challenge.

The winner proposed an integrated solution consisting of Dynamic Response Spectroscopy (DRS) and Microwave Field Inspection Tools. The DRS is primarily utilised for the inspection of the carbon steel pipe remaining wall thickness and it also offers a high level assessment of the wrap integrity while the microwave method is primarily utilised for the assessment of the repair integrity and the external surface of piping substrate.

Congratulations to the inaugural PETRONAS Technology Challenge winner!

The inaugural PETRONAS Technology Challenge has come to an end! We are pleased to announce the winner of the first PETRONAS Technology Challenge, on Monetisation of Associated Gas from Offshore Flares.

The goal of this challenge is to discover possibly the best economic solutions to monetise Associated Gas (AG) from offshore flaring facilities which has neither existing gas utilisation nor evacuation infrastructure. The objective is to beneficially utilize the hydrocarbon resource and reduce the carbon footprint and its intensity.

Although the recent advances in Technology has enabled economic deployment of various gas monetisation system in onshore environments, the challenge to bring these solutions offshore still remains.

This first Challenge received 34 complete proposals from 10 different countries across the globe, with a diverse range of promising solutions. The solutions ranged from Gas Processing, Gas to Liquids, Gas to Power, Gas to Solids and even Gas to Food. These proposals were subjected to an evaluation based on the criteria developed by our team of techno-commercial experts.

From these submissions, we have chosen one proposal as the winner of our challenge.

Congratulations to the winner:

The proposed solution looks at a floating compressed natural gas system (FCNG) with innovative CNG transfer systems.

PETRONAS will continue to work further with the winner to proceed with maturation of their proposal and subsequent deployment upon meeting the agreed mutual targets.

We would like to thank all visitors and participants who visited Innovation Gateway @ PETRONAS and showed interest in our challenge. We will be updating our page from time to time with more interesting challenges and we look forward to your continued interest and participation.
