With 15 people and only two phone lines, we started operating from within the premises of the Prime Minister’s Department at Jalan Dato’ Onn, Kuala Lumpur.

We signed our first Production Sharing Contract (PSC) in 1976, transforming the concession system governing the oil exploration and exploitation to the more equitable PSC system, later heralding the creation of PETRONAS Carigali Sdn Bhd.

When Malaysia was hit with a global oil crisis due to shortage of diesel in 1979, we set up three skid-tank stations to retail kerosene and diesel to customers in Kuala Lumpur and Petaling Jaya.

Stepping beyond our role as just an operator, PETRONAS Carigali Sdn Bhd was incorporated in 1978 to actively embark on exploration and production activities.

PETRONAS expanded into the downstream business with the incorporation of ASEAN Bintulu Fertilizer Sdn Bhd in 1980.

We drilled our first appraisal well in the Duyong gas field, and achieved our first oil discovery at the Dulang oil field in 1981.

On 3 July 1981, we opened our flagship service station in Taman Tun Dr Ismail, Kuala Lumpur, where it still stands to this day. This paved the way to the setting up of many more stations throughout Malaysia, leading to the establishment of PETRONAS Dagangan Sdn Bhd.

PETRONAS' first learning institutions, the Petroleum Industrial Training Institute (now known as INSTEP) was established in 1981, to address our manpower needs for the rapidly expanding business. Today, our learning institutions serve the needs of the industry and include Akademi Laut Malaysia, PETRONAS Leadership Centre, Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS and Kimanis Training Centre.

Malaysia LNG Sdn Bhd (MLNG), incorporated in 1978, led to the completion of the PETRONAS LNG Complex in Bintulu, Sarawak in August 1982. It paved way for Malaysia's entry into LNG business which saw its first cargo set sail for Japan on 29 January 1983.

We established PETRONAS Dagangan Berhad in August 1982 to market our downstream oil and gas products, adding value to our expanding oil and gas value chain. Today, we have more than 1,000 service stations across the country.

Our first wholly-owned refinery plant commenced operations on 9 March 1983 in Kertih, Terengganu, with a capacity of 30,000 bpd. In less than a month, we exported our first production of naphtha to Japan.
