Public Talk: 'Through the Kebaya' by Victoria Cattoni
Date: Wednesday, 07 Sep 2005

Talk by Victoria Cattoni will discuss her recent interactive research-based project 'Through the Kebaya'. This cross-cultural project undertaken in Indonesia and Australia was developed around an extensive series of video-performance based workshops and exhibitions held in Jakarta, Bandung, Yogyakarta, Semarang and Bali in Indonesia and Darwin in Australia.

The talk will use visual data to focus on the multiple forms, functions and meanings of the kebaya as it exists today in a number of locations in Indonesia, providing an increased comprehension of the changing roles and status of women, and of how women see themselves today.

Victoria will also discuss her methodology, which uses new media in a sympathetic and personally interactive way that sets out to bring the audience closer to the work.

Victoria Cattoni is currently artist-in-residence at Rimbun Dahan. Her residency is part of an annual programme by Asialink, Australia, to enable selected Australian artists to take up residency in countries in the region.
