PETRONAS today presented education aid worth RM100 million under its flagship PETRONAS Education Sponsorship Programme (PESP) to 318 outstanding SPM leavers in the company’s ongoing corporate social responsibility (CSR) commitment towards education.

The sponsorship is part of PETRONAS’ efforts in supporting Malaysia’s human capital development and in enabling deserving students to pursue their tertiary education at top local and international universities.
The scholarships were presented by Minister of Youth and Sports Malaysia, YB Encik Khairy Jamaluddin witnessed by PETRONAS’ Senior Vice President of Group Human Resource Management, Dato’ Raiha Azni Abd Rahman, in a ceremony held at the Cultural Activities Centre of International Islamic University Malaysia, Gombak.

In congratulating all recipients at the ceremony, Dato’ Raiha Azni Abd Rahman said, “PETRONAS hopes to continue nurturing the right talents by giving them opportunities to realise their academic potential. Over the years, PESP has benefited PETRONAS and ultimately the nation as it increased the number of skilled talents in various fields and disciplines in meeting market and industry demands.”

Recipients of the sponsorship will pursue tertiary studies majoring in petroleum engineering, mechanical engineering, geophysics, finance, law, and other industry-related courses at universities in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand and Canada. Some of the students will further their studies at Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) in Perak. Under the PESP, PETRONAS will support the students beginning from foundation studies up to their first bachelor degree.

According to YB Encik Khairy Jamaluddin, “The government appreciates the effort taken by PETRONAS in nurturing future leaders. I hope the recipients will deliver significant contribution and be able to fill the gaps of skilled professionals towards the betterment of the nation.”

This year, PETRONAS has received more than 10,000 applications. PETRONAS has set stringent selection standards based on merit, include outstanding academic performance, demonstrable extra-curricular activities and proven leadership skills.

Since its inception in 1975, PESP has benefited more than 35,000 students nationwide with an estimated investment value of RM2.9 billion.

Apart from PESP, PETRONAS also carries out a community outreach initiative that focuses on assisting underprivileged and borderline primary and secondary students across Malaysia to improve their overall academic achievement known as ‘Program Sentuhan Ilmu PETRONAS’ (PSIP).
