The lights-off countdown event, a joint effort between Suria KLCC and KLCC Property Holdings Berhad  (a PETRONAS subsidiary) were witnessed by thousands of Malaysians and international tourists who were there to join the celebration and pledge their support towards saving Mother Earth.

Present at the event were local celebrities including Joe Flizzow, Cheryl Samad, Sazzy Falak, Bernie Chan, Zizan Nin, Hani Harun, Dato Mohammad Medan Abdullah - Senior General Manager of PETRONAS Group Corporate Affairs Division, Francis Tan - General Manager of Suria KLCC, Fartini Zaharuddin - PR & Communications Manager of Suria KLCC and Yasmin Abdullah of KLCC Property Holdings Berhad to pledge their support to Earth Hour.

Hence, through this event, we also hope to increase awareness among the public that each and everyone has the power to protect the planet,” enthused Fartini Zaharuddin, PR & Communications Manager of Suria KLCC.

“Once again, PETRONAS supports the Earth Hour initiative to create awareness on the need to conserve the environment. Balancing the energy requirements for development and caring for the environment remains a global challenge but it is one that we are committed to achieve,” said PETRONAS Group Corporate Affairs Division Senior General Manager, Dato Mohammad Medan Abdullah.

At 8.30pm, they lit up Suria KLCC LED candles to symbolize the moment of illumination to take a stand and make that move to protect the planet. One thousand of the Suria KLCC LED candles were given out for free along with McDonald’s ‘Be Our Guest’ cards as a token of appreciation for the participant’s support.

The crowd was also entertained with eco-themed performances throughout the night with junk percussion shows by KL Stompers and songs sung by the choir group, Dithyrambic Singers. During the acoustic choir performances, the public sang along to songs such as Earth Song and Heal The World made popular by Michael Jackson, among other songs. They were also given the opportunity to sign their Earth Hour pledges on the pledge wall.

Going Beyond The Hour
Suria KLCC and PETRONAS’s commitment to sustainable environment goes beyond Earth Hour throughout the years. Energy saving efforts is consistently demonstrated while constant research activities remain crucial to these businesses, as they continue to look for more environmental friendly ways to conduct their business.

Since 2008, Suria KLCC has invested in switching to energy saving lights within areas in the shopping mall. The shopping mall’s lights are also programmed to automatically switch on and off during desired periods to avoid energy wastage.  The building also uses a heat wheel system since 2010 to pre-cool fresh air into the mall as well as channel the recycled pre cooled air from the mall into the carpark, which saves a significant amount of energy. Suria KLCC also installed hand dryers in its public toilets to reduce the use of paper towels.

The PETRONAS Twin Towers’ air conditioning for example, uses chilled water produced by the Gas District Cooling (GDC) plants which are powered by clean burning natural gas. This method generates less CO2 emissions compared to conventional cooling using electricity.

Over the past three years, the towers successfully reduced its chilled water consumption used for air conditioning (measured as refrigeration ton per hour (Rth), saving three million Rth. That’s equivalent to turning off more than 1500 home air conditioning units for a year!

The PETRONAS Twin Towers also reduced its power consumption during the same period from 64 million kilowatts hour (kWh) to 60 million kWh, equivalent to taking 517 cars off the roads.
