PETRONAS BRINGS TOGETHER OIL AND GAS INDUSTRY FOR SAFETY IN MMEA’S “SAHABAT MARITIM” PROGRAMME

 
EIGHT oil and gas companies today signed a collaboration agreement with PETRONAS and the Malaysia Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) to be part of the on-going “Sahabat Maritim” safety outreach programme for fishing communities in Sabah and Labuan.

With this partnership PETRONAS, along with Shell Malaysia, Murphy Oil, Hess, UMW Oil and Gas Corporation Berhad, ConocoPhillips Malaysia, Petrofac, REPSOL and SapuraKencana Petroleum will be working together with MMEA to educate fishermen about the safety implications of activities conducted close to offshore oil platforms in Sabah and Labuan. 

The agreement today was signed between PETRONAS Vice President of Malaysia Petroleum Management (MPM), Encik Zamri Jusoh with President, ConocoPhillips Malaysia, Mr Todd Creeger; President of UMW Oil & Gas Corporation Berhad, Encik Rohaizad Darus; Vice President-Asia Pacific of Hess, Mr Sauu Kakok; Vice President, Production & Operations, PM3 Operating Area, Talisman Malaysia Ltd, Mr Paul Weir; General Manager of Murphy Oil Sabah Operation, Mr Mark Mick; General Manager of Shell Malaysia, Safety & Environment, Mr Prithipal Singh and Senior Vice President, Engineering and Construction – Malaysia, SapuraKencana Petroleum, Encik Ahmad Zakiruddin Mohamed.

Witnessing the ceremony were MMEA Deputy Director General (Operation), Rear Admiral Maritime Dato’ Che Hassan Jusoh, Deputy Director General (Management) of MMEA, Encik Samsuni Mohd Nor and PETRONAS General Manager of Internal Communications, Encik Khairuddin Jaafar — representing PETRONAS Senior General Manager, Group Strategic 
Communications, Norliza Kamaruddin.

In his speech Zamri said that oil and gas operations are driven by stringent procedures and guidelines to mitigate all potential hazards that could lead to any untoward incident. 

“We are responsible to put in place all necessary measures to ensure the safety of people living around the areas where we operate including our staff, contractors and the surrounding communities,” said Zamri.

“With this collaboration PETRONAS and its partners can now synergise all efforts to ensure the highest safety and health standards and safeguard the community, environment and their respective operations.

In addition, Rear Admiral Maritime, Dato’ Che Hassan Jusoh said: “MMEA welcomes this effort as it is consistent with the strategic goals of the ‘Sahabat Maritim’ programme. With the strong collaboration with players in the oil and gas, shipping, tourism and fishing industries MMEA hopes that the extensive participation the maritime community will further strengthen the security of Malaysian waters.”

To date, PETRONAS together with MMEA have engaged fishing communities in Lahad Datu and Pulau Matanani in July and August respectively. 

The final leg of this year’s “Sahabat Maritim” programme is scheduled to be conducted in Labuan in October 2015. 

Meanwhile, commenting on the collaboration, partners of “Sahabat Maritim” programme said: 

Vice President-Asia Pacific of Hess, Mr Sauu Kakok: “We commend PETRONAS for taking the lead in this industry-wide collaboration, and Hess is pleased to be part of the partnership because it represents a unified and lean approach to a common issue. Among peer operators, we can duplicate best practices and we can share resources.”

President, ConocoPhillips Malaysia, Mr Todd Creeger: “At ConocoPhillips, safety and environmental stewardship are core to our business’ success. The “Sahabat Maritim” program will provide a great opportunity to collaborate with other industry parties and work together towards this common goal.”

General Manager for Shell Malaysia, Safety & Environment, Mr Prithipal Singh: “We are pleased to join forces with the rest of the industry for this important initiative. The resulting synergy from this industry-wide approach will go a long way towards positively impacting key stakeholders like the fishermen who live and work near our areas of operation and we can all benefit from having a strong safety culture.”

General Manager of Murphy Oil Sabah Operation, Mr Mark Mick: “All parties will benefit from working together, problems and concerns can be addressed together through the “Sahabat Maritim” program quickly and effectively. As efforts are made to engage with the local fishing communities to create awareness programs on safe fishing activities, we hope that this will not only bring about good rapport and mutual understanding with the communities but ultimately will see occurrences of vessel encroachment near offshore operations reduced.”

President of UMW Oil & Gas Corporation Berhad, Encik Rohaizad Darus: “We believe this collaboration will enable more resources from the various participants to be pooled together to be used more efficiently in a more meaningful way. “Sahabat Maritim” gives us the opportunity to contribute to the people in the areas where we operate and provide us with a channel to give back to the community.”
