PETRONAS AND MMEA PROMOTE SAFETY AMONG FISHING COMMUNITIES IN LAHAD DATU

LAHAD DATU, Saturday - PETRONAS together with the Malaysia Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) handed over 30 life-jackets to promote safety among fishing communities in Kg Mundas Tunku here, today. The life jackets were distributed in conjunction with PETRONAS and MMEA’s programme “Sahabat Maritim”, which commenced from 3 – 6 June 2015.
 
PETRONAS Chairman for Sabah and Labuan, Encik Firouz Asnan said: “PETRONAS is committed to the highest safety and health standards and we are duty-bound to ensure the safety of our staff, contractors and members of the surrounding communities wherever we operate.”
 
During the four-day event, various safety-themed activities were conducted to drive home the importance of safety effectively to various segments of the community
 
“PETRONAS’ holistic approach in instilling safety includes customized fun science shows, quizzes and exhibitions by PETROSAINS,” continued Firouz.
 
In addition, PETRONAS, assisted by volunteers from MMEA also carried out a “gotong-royong” session, refurbished the community futsal court, cleaned the nearby beach and contributed basic school items to a local orphanage to promote a safer, cleaner and more comfortable surrounding for the villagers.
 
PETRONAS and MMEA’s partnership in the “Sahabat Maritim” Programme was inked in March at the Langkawi International Maritime & Aerospace Exhibition 2015 (LIMA 2015).
 
“Sahabat Maritim” is a safety outreach programme for coastal communities, especially fishermen in Sabah and Labuan, aimed at educating fishing communities in Sabah and Labuan on the dangers of vessel encroachment within the 500 meter safety radius surrounding PETRONAS’ offshore operations.
 
MMEA is one of the enforcement agencies responsible for the safety of PETRONAS facilities in Malaysian waters.
